4K or 85 Inch? Five Rules to Pick a TV for the 2026 World Cup

Buying a TV weeks before kickoff is fine — if you size it correctly.
Rule 1: Measure viewing distance
- 55" → about 7 ft (2.1 m) minimum
- 65" → about 8 ft (2.4 m)
- 75–85" → 9–10 ft (2.7–3 m) or you will see pixels on diagonal runs
Rule 2: Brightness beats 8K
For sports in a lit room, peak brightness (nits) and anti-glare coating matter more than 8K resolution.
Rule 3: HDMI ports
You need at least three HDMI inputs: cable box/streamer, console, spare. Verify eARC for soundbar passthrough.
Rule 4: Motion handling
Look for 120 Hz native panel or effective 120 Hz with motion smoothing you can disable (soap-opera effect off for film, on optional for football).
Rule 5: Wall mount vs stand
World Cup parties bump TVs. Use a stud-mounted mount or wide-base stand. Search: TV wall mount 65 inch.
Quick picks by room
- Studio: 48–55" 4K
- Family room: 65" 4K HDR
- Dedicated media room: 75"+ with dimmable lights
