Opening-Day Prediction Review: Two Picks, Two Exact Scores
Editorial note: WC26 Guide compiles this guide from published schedules, official channels and practical fan-planning needs. Ticketing, visa, broadcast, price and venue rules can change; verify linked official sources before payment or travel.

Before the opening-day matches kicked off, WC26 Guide published two score predictions:
| Match | Pre-match pick | Final result | Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mexico vs South Africa | 2–0 | 2–0 | Exact |
| Korea Republic vs Czechia | 2–1 | 2–1 | Exact |
The original prediction graphic above has been retained unchanged. The two calls produced a 2/2 exact-score start.
Why Mexico 2–0 made sense
The model gave Mexico a clear advantage based on home environment, squad strength and expected control of possession. South Africa still carried transition danger, but Mexico were more likely to create repeated chances and protect the lead.
Why Korea Republic 2–1 made sense
Korea Republic received the stronger win probability because of their attacking quality and higher-end individual talent. Czechia's structure and physical threat made a clean sheet less likely, leading to the 2–1 score call.
What the result does — and does not — prove
Two exact scores are an excellent start, not proof that future matches are predictable. Football remains sensitive to lineups, injuries, red cards, finishing variance and tactical changes. We will keep publishing picks before kickoff and retain every miss as well as every hit.
Next up: Canada 2–1 Bosnia and USA 2–0 Paraguay predictions.
